Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic Garage Floors: What's the difference?

If you've been researching garage floor coatings, you've probably seen the words epoxy and polyaspartic everywhere. You may have even heard one is "better" than the other.

The truth is, they are different coating materials with different strengths. At DBP Texas Epoxy, we use them as part of a complete coating system rather than pretending one product is the answer to every floor.

What is Epoxy Flooring?

Epoxy is a resin-based coating commonly used as a basecoat for concrete floors. It creates a strong bond to properly prepared concrete and provides an excellent foundation for decorative color flakes.

For our full-flake garage floor systems, the concrete is mechanically prepared before the epoxy basecoat is applied. Decorative flakes are then broadcast into the wet coating until the floor reaches full coverage.

Once cured, the excess flakes are removed and the surface is prepared for the final topcoat.

What is Polyaspartic Coating?

Polyaspartic is a fast-curing coating commonly used as a protective topcoat in garage floor systems.

One of its biggest advantages is UV stability. This makes it a great choice for the final protective layer of a garage floor that may be exposed to sunlight near the garage door.

Polyaspartic topcoats also provide durability and help protect the decorative flake system underneath.

So, which one is better?

This is where things get confusing.

Epoxy and polyaspartic don't always need to compete.

We use an epoxy basecoat and a polyaspartic topcoat because each material serves a different purpose within the coating system.

The epoxy provides the foundation for our full-flake broadcast, as well as better adhesion to and flexibility with moving concrete, while the polyaspartic topcoat protects and seals the finished floor like armor.

Why We Don't Offer One-Day Garage Floors:

You've probably seen companies advertising one-day garage floor installatins.

At DBP Texas Epoxy, our standard full-flake garage floor system is installed over 2 days.

Surface Preparation Matters

The coating products are only part of the equation.

Before applying our garage floor coating systems, we mechanically prepare the concrete using professional diamond grinding equipment. This removes surface contaminants and creates a concrete profile for the coating system.

Concrete conditions can vary, especially in Central Texas. Moisture, previous coatings, repairs, and the age of the concrete can all affect the installation process.

That's why we evaluate the concrete before recommending a coating system.
